Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids, close to the lash line. It may be chronic and typically noncontagious.
The most common cause is excessive amounts of the natural bacteria that live on skin. Other causes include gland problems (acne rosacea), viruses and allergens. Blepharitis causes the lids to look red and swollen with associated tenderness, and possible crusting along the lashes. If the inflammation extends into the eye, the patient may have irritation (foreign body sensation), blurry vision, light sensitivity and dryness.
Treatment consists of cleansing the lids regularly, warm compresses and possibly medications.
