Taylor & Troy, MI Cataract Treatment - Castleman Eye Center

If you have cataracts, you can now choose to reduce your dependence on eyeglasses after surgery!

A cataract occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, usually causing blurry vision and glare when driving at night. Cataracts are removed using ultrasound, though there is a common misconception that a LASER is used for this.

Many years ago, the only option was to remove the cataract, then use thick “coke bottle” glasses or a contact lens after surgery. More recently, intraocular lenses (IOLs or implants) became available. Traditional single vision (monofocal) IOLs help patients see well in the distance; however, reading glasses or bifocals are usually still required with this option.

Over time, the natural lens of the eye hardens, which prevents it from focusing as it once did. This inability to focus, or accommodate, is called presbyopia and its earliest symptom is difficulty reading or seeing things that are close up. Typically, the solution was bifocals or reading glasses.

 MULTIFOCAL LENSES

At the Castleman Eye Center, we’re happy to provide the latest technology in cataract surgery: the Crystalens, ReSTOR, and ReZoom or premium lenses! Dr. Akler has been approved to use all three of the presbyopia-correcting IOLs, which reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses or contact lenses for distance, intermediate, AND near vision! These lenses are designed to provide multifunctional vision for patients who have a strong desire for greater independence from glasses or contacts. During your consultation, our ophthalmologists will determine if you’re a candidate, then recommend the lens they feel is bestsuited for your lifestyle and activities.

The Crystalens® works naturally with the eye's focusing muscle to rejuvenate the vision to a youthful state. It turns back time by mimicking the eye's natural process of focusing up close, far away, and everywhere in between. People who wish to be less dependent on glasses for distance, intermediate and near vision are good candidates for the crystalens®. FDA Clinical Study Crystalens® results showed that 98.4 percent of patients can read a newspaper AND pass their driver's test WITHOUT glasses and 100 percent of patients can see at intermediate distances WITHOUT glasses!

The ReSTOR® lens is specifically designed to provide a person with the ability to see objects far away, near and everywhere in between. People who have had prior LASER eye surgery (including LASIK, PRK, Epi-LASIK, or any other corneal LASER eye surgery), may be acceptable candidates for the ReSTOR® lens, as long as their eyes are in good health.

The ReZoom™ lens is designed to treat cataracts and turn back the clock to restore much of your ability to see up close and at a distance. The ReZoom™ lens has a patented new design which creates multiple focal points, so you can see well at a variety of distances (near, intermediate and far). In clinical studies, 92 percent  of those who received the ReZoom™ lens reported wearing glasses either "never" or "occasionally."

The Castleman Eye Center is pleased to offer Alcon's Toric IOL for astigmatism correction after cataract surgery.  The recent advancements in technology have now made it possible to provide an effective solution for patients that have astigmatism.  Until recently, patients that were IOL candidates and had astigmatism, had no option built into the lens, that would correct the astigmatism aspect of their visual condition.  Surgeons would typically perform LASIK after insertion of an IOL to correct the complete visual picture.  If patients did not have astigmatism correction after IOL implantation, then contacts or glasses would be required to deal with the astigmatism.
