If you have cataracts, you now have a choice!  You can be glasses free after surgery!

A cataract occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, usually causing blurry vision and glare when driving at night. Many years ago, the only option was to remove the cataract, then use thick “coke bottle” glasses or a contact lens after surgery. More recently, intraocular lenses (IOLs or implants) became available. Traditional single vision (monofocal) IOLs help patients see well in the distance; however, reading glasses or bifocals are usually still required with this option.

Over time, the natural lens of the eye hardens, which prevents it from focusing as it once did. This inability to focus, or accommodate, is called presbyopia and its earliest symptom is difficulty reading or seeing things that are close up. Typically, the solution was bifocals or reading glasses.

At the Castleman Eye Center, we’re happy to provide the latest technology in cataract surgery: the nanoFLEX™ Aspheric Lens(allows for distance and near vision without bifocals) and Acrysof Toric Lens (corrects astigmatism) and the Acrysof® ReStor® Lens.  During your consultation, our ophthalmologists will determine if you’re a candidate, then recommend the lens they feel is best suited for your lifestyle and activities.

Blended Vision using nanoFLEX™ Aspheric Lens

The nanoFLEX™ lens is one of the most versatile and innovative vision correction solutions available today. For most patients, Blended Vision using the nanoFLEX™ lens may deliver quality vision across all ranges:

Distance Vision
The range of vision that includes focal points 7 feet from your eyes and beyond. Items that typically fall within this range include street signs, movie screens and billboards.
Intermediate Vision
The range of vision that includes focal points between about 1 ½ feet and 7 feet from your eyes. Items that typically fall within this range include computer monitors, TV screens and car dashboards.
Near Vision
The range of vision that includes focal points less than 18 inches from your eyes. Items that typically fall within this range are books, menus, cell phone screens, and ingredient or prescription labels.

The goal of Blended Vision using the nanoFLEX™ Lens is to enable most distance and near vision tasks without eyeglasses.   The nanoFLEX™ Lens in the dominant eye is set for distance and the non-dominant eye is set for near vision.  The two eyes work together for a combined result that is clear and comfortable vision at all distances.  With the nanoFLEX™, you won't experience the vision limitations that monovision patients experience.  For example, problems with depth perception, night vision and intermediate vision.

TORIC LENS-Astigmatism Correction

The Castleman Eye Center is pleased to offer Alcon's Toric IOL for astigmatism correction after cataract surgery.  The recent advancements in technology have now made it possible to provide an effective solution for patients that have astigmatism.  Until recently, patients that were IOL candidates and had astigmatism, had no option built into the lens, that would correct the astigmatism aspect of their visual condition.  Surgeons would typically perform LASIK after insertion of an IOL to correct the complete visual picture.  If patients did not have astigmatism correction after IOL implantation, then contacts or glasses would be required to deal with the astigmatism.

ReSTOR®Lens

The Alcon AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens is a breakthrough lens for cataract surgery that lets patients see from near to far, usually without glasses. An innovative optical technology called "apodization" makes this lens uniquely effective, especially when placed in both eyes. A similar technology has been used for years in microscopes and telescopes to improve image quality and has now been patented for use in intraocular lenses by Alcon.

Most ReSTOR® lens patients find that they can read a book, work on the computer, drive a car (day and night), and play golf or tennis with an increased freedom from glasses. In other words, they achieve glasses free vision for near, intermediate and distance vision. This was not an option for cataract patients until recently. Your doctor will discuss all options with you and together you will decide what lens is best suited for your lifestyle.
